The Silver State of Nevada Models LGBTQ Inclusivity With Four New Bills

November 23, 2021

Not many people are aware of the laws that have been put in place to further deprive the LGBTQ of their fundamental human rights, on top of the preexisting discrimination. Institutions refuse to recognize this community, they omit them from society and create laws that restrict them from being part of the movement.

Review Journal | In Nevada, the governor signed four new bills that relate directly to the LGBTQ

In Nevada, the governor signed four new bills that relate directly to the LGBTQ, before and during the pride day celebration in Las Vegas.

Originally, in Nevada, it was a criminal offense worthy of a felony conviction to intentionally spread HIV. Now ‘intentionally spreading’ a disease like HIV sounds like a horrible thing to do clearly, but what it really is, is a guise to ostracize and criminalize the LGBTQ.

You may not easily understand how it works so let’s break it down. Data shows that HIV is a lot more common among gay men. This is mainly because of the ways in which they get physically intimate with each other.  Some of the methods of physical intimacy put them at a greater risk of transmission. Knowing this, gay men are targeted for intentionally spreading the disease by just living normal lives. The law, in essence, is a prohibition on gay men to exercise their rights in a relationship.

Additionally, since they are deprived of access to medical care because of discrimination, they end up potentially spreading the virus to a lot of people if they have contracted it somehow.

PBA Health | It is now possible for pharmacists to dispense HIV medication, both preventive and treatment drugs, to people who need it, without requiring a prescription

One of the new bills the Nevada governor signed was to remove the felony charge from offenses classified in that category of intentionally spreading disease, and make it more of a public health issue as it should be. He also signed another bill that now makes it possible for pharmacists to dispense HIV medication, both preventive and treatment drugs, to people who need it, without requiring a prescription. The law even went further to permit pharmacists to provide HIV testing as well.

This means that the LGBTQ can know their HIV status and have access to treatment outside of the discriminatory hospital environment.

The Silver State, Nevada, is championing societal acceptance and inclusion of the LGBTQ. Local governments within the state are now mandated to include gender identity when gathering information for profiling, from all citizens of the state. All data collected will remain confidential and will only be used to inform government actions. This ultimately ensures that the LGBTQ plus community is well accounted for and represented.

Forbes | Businesses owned by LGBTQ are now able to access loans like other minority-owned businesses

Even businesses owned by LGBTQ are now able to access loans like other minority-owned businesses. Schools have also not been left out as the history associated with LGBTQ is set to be included in civics classes, same as other communities and cultures in the United States.

It really was a big win for the LGBTQ in Nevada. Many of the laws that contribute to the daily issues the community faces have been replaced with more inclusive ones. It’s the human thing to do, and more states are taking steps in a similar direction.
